Spotlight on methanol DF projects

According to the European Commission, the shipping industry today accounts for about 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. As demand for shipping grows, the figure could reach 10% to 13 % in a few decades if no action is taken. The global shipping industry has been struggling to wean itself off heavy fuel oil. Therefore, methanol dual fuel has increasingly become the preferred alternative fuel for shipping companies when place newbuilding orders. Methanol fuel has the advantages of low emissions and high energy efficiency, which improves the flexibility and operational efficiency of ships.

SMC, as a service provider, currently has 15 methanol dual fuel newbuildings under its supervision, covering different types of vessels including SOV, chemical/product tanker, bulk carrier, and PCTC, and we are looking forward to further developments and achievements in this dual fuel sector in the future.
