September 20, 2024Attendance for 2 Stroke Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine FAT: “SMC’s Commitment to Sustainable Innovation: Insights from the 2-Stroke Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine Factory Acceptance Test”
SMC is proud to share insights from our team’s attendance at the factory acceptance test (FAT) of China’s first methanol dual-fuel engine on the 18th of May 2024. This advanced engine, the 6G50ME-C9.6-LGIM-EGRBP, developed by CSE’s Dalian Marine Diesel Engine (DMD) factory under a MAN E&S license, boasts a rated power of 10,320 kW at 100 rpm. Destined to provide propulsive power to a 49,500 DWT chemical/product oil tanker, under construction at Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), it embodies the maritime industry’s alignment with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.
Methanol, with advantages over LNG in storage, transport, and emissions, offers a promising path to significantly reduce Sulphur Oxides, Nitrogen Oxides, and Particulate Matter. When sourced renewably, methanol has the potential to achieve net-zero carbon levels, supporting the global effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
During the FAT, our technical team observed extensive testing of the engine’s flexibility at different loading conditions to operate seamlessly on both methanol and conventional fuels. This dual-fuel capability ensures adaptability and high performance under varied fuel conditions. Key aspects tested included the fuel injection system, combustion processes, emission control mechanisms, interchangeability between conventional and methanol fuels at various loads and rigorous safety protocols specific to methanol usage.
This comprehensive testing reinforces SMC’s commitment to sustainable marine solutions, enhancing our understanding and commitment to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization goals and support our partners in meeting the emissions reduction targets set under the Paris Agreement.
Our participation in this FAT strengthens SMC’s leadership in sustainable innovation, equipping our team with critical expertise to advanced, cleaner and more efficient technologies. As we apply this knowledge to ongoing and future projects, we remain dedicated to supporting our clients in achieving environmental stewardship, resilience, and compliance with global climate commitments.
Stay tuned as we continue to explore and lead in greener solutions for our industry!
