SMC Celebrates Delivery of QatarEnergy’s First LNG Vessel at Samsung Heavy Industries

SMC recently marked a significant milestone with the delivery of Id’asah, QatarEnergy’s first LNG vessel, at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. This state-of-the-art ship is part of QatarEnergy’s record-breaking fleet expansion program, involving the construction of 128 LNG carriers across South Korean and Chinese shipyards. The initiative stands as the largest shipbuilding program in the history of the LNG sector, underscoring QatarEnergy’s commitment to delivering cleaner energy globally.

The Id’asah represents the first completed vessel from Samsung Heavy Industries as part of the ambitious project. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the LNG carriers are designed to enhance fuel efficiency and significantly reduce emissions, aligning with QatarEnergy’s environmental goals.

Steel Cutting of Two 50,000 DWT Class Oil/Chemical Tankers at HD Hyundai Mipo

SMC is pleased to announce Steel Cutting of two 50,000 DWT class oil/chemical tankers, Hull No. 2912/2913 at HD Hyundai Mipo Co., Ltd, Korea. This is the first vessel and second vessel in a series of fifteen vessels ordered by PT Pertamina International Shipping, Indonesia.

The vessel will be classed by DNV and built to Panama flag requirements, scheduled to be delivered on 28 October and 31 October 2025 separately.

Steel Cutting of 174,000 m3 LNG Carrier at Samsung Heavy Industries

SMC is delighted to announce the Steel Cutting ceremony for a 174,000 m3 LNG carrier (Hull no. SN2645) under its supervision at Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea. This is the vessel ordered by Tropic 18 Limited, Bermuda.

The vessel will be classed by American Bureau of Shipping and built to Republic of Liberia flag requirements. The delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 18 April 2026.

Steel Cutting of 174,000 m3 LNG Carrier at Samsung Heavy Industries

SMC is delighted to announce the Steel Cutting ceremony for a 174,000 LNG carrier (Hull no. SN2644) under its supervision at Samsung Heavy Industries, Korea. This is the vessel ordered by Tropic 17 Limited, Bermuda.

The vessel will be classed by American Bureau of Shipping and built to Republic of Liberia flag requirements. The delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 18 April 2026.

Steel Cutting of 12,500 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessel at TZSF Shipyard

SMC is delighted to announce the Steel Cutting ceremony for a 12,500 DWT multi- purpose vessel (Hull No. SF230202) under its supervision at Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Co., Ltd, China. This is the second vessel in a series of four vessels ordered by Krey Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG. & Auerbach Schifffahrt GmbH & Co. KG.

The vessel will be classed by DNV and built to Portugal flag requirements. The delivery of the vessel is scheduled for Q4 2025.

Keel Laying of 9,300 CEU PCTC at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Shipyard

SMC is delighted to announce the Keel Laying ceremony for a 9,300 CEU PCTC (Hull No. CMHI293-01) under its supervision at CMHI (Jiangsu) Shipyard, China. This is the first vessel in a series of two ordered by China Merchants Energy Transport Investment Co., Ltd.

The vessel will be classed by DNV & CCS and built to Hong Kong flag requirements. The delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 13 October 2025.

Keel Laying of First Bernhard Schulte LCO2 Carrier

In December 2023, the Schulte Group announced the expansion of its fleet portfolio by ordering its first LCO2 carrier. At the end of November 2024, the keel-laying ceremony took place at the yard of Dalian Shipbuilding & Offshore Company (DSOC) in China, marking an important milestone on this project.

The newbuilding has been commissioned by Bernhard Schulte, the group’s ship owning arm. The plan approval and construction supervision are carried out by the group’s newbuilding division Schulte Marine Concept (S.M.C.).

The newbuilding is designed as an LCO2 tanker of the type 2PG/3G, suitable for the transportation of refrigerated liquefied gases in two cylindrical-shaped independent cargo tanks of the IMO type C. With a cargo capacity of 7,500 m3, it will feature innovative technologies to significantly reduce its carbon footprint with LNG as the primary fuel for the ship. Combined with other proven technologies, such as wind-assisted rotor sails and air lubrication, it is expected to achieve a carbon footprint approximately 34% lower than that of conventional ships running on marine fuel.

The novel carrier is committed to a long-term time charter agreement with Northern Lights, a joint venture owned by Shell, TotalEnergies and Equinor, and will support the development of the world’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. Here, ships custom-built for transportation of liquefied CO2 will safely transport the chemical compound from Northern Lights’ customers across Northwest Europe to the CO2 receiving terminal at Øygarden, Norway before permanent geological storage. Northern Lights envisages putting to work four LCO2 tankers in total, with the first one having been already delivered in November. The delivery of the Bernhard Schulte vessel is scheduled for 2026.

Quarterly Project Managers Meeting

SMC held its fourth-quarter Project Manager meeting in Shanghai office. This regular event is designed to systematically review SMC’s HSE and operational performance, procedures, use of PAL-NB, with a primary focus on HSE and internal compliance. Identified areas for improvement are addressed and qualified for corrective and preventive actions. Among other topics effective internal communication between project managers, and between project managers and HR department were brainstormed.

Grand Ceremony for the Pre-Production of Yangzi Xinfu’s 175,000m³ YZJ2022-1475/76 LNG MKIII Corrugated Plate

On December 5th, a milestone event unfolded as SMC participated in the grand ceremony marking the “Yangzi Xinfu 175,000m³ YZJ2022-1475/76 LNG MKIII Corrugated Plate Pre-Production.” Hosted by Ningbo Kairong New Energy, the event drew representatives from Yangzi Xinfu Shipyard, GTT, BV, and SMC, showcasing a collaborative effort to advance the large LNG carrier market.

The ceremony took place within the Ningbo Kairong production workshop, where stakeholders gathered for the significant moment. In a symbolic gesture, the shipowner pressed the start button, officially initiating production of the 175,000 cubic meter YZJ2022-1475 VLGC LNG MKIII corrugated plate. The event marked not only the commencement of production but also a historic milestone for the private shipyard as it embarks on manufacturing large-scale LNG carriers.

This development represents a key advancement for Yangzi Xinfu Shipyard, highlighting the shipyard’s innovative capabilities and its readiness to compete in the global LNG carrier market. The collaboration among stakeholders underscores the strategic importance of partnerships in achieving industry breakthroughs.

As the LNG market continues to grow, the successful launch of this project positions Ningbo Kairong and its partners as significant players in shaping the future of sustainable energy transport.
